Futsal was back with a bang last weekend as Northern Regional Futsal Championships raised the curtain on the post Covid-19 return of the sport. After nearly four months of shutdown, a record number of players made their way to Carrara, Mt Gravatt, Mt Warren and Oxley, for a packed weekend of matches. Behind the scenes, an unprecedented amount of organsation took place. The staff worked tirelessly to ahere to the strict safety protocols required for sporting events. They were supported by an incredible army of volunteers, who gave up their time to help make the event possible. There were limitations on how many spectators could enter the venue, but those who did raised the roof, creating the best possible atmosphere. On the court, there was no signs of rustiness on show, as the players produced a fantastic show of football across the venues and age groups. By close of play Sunday each age group winner had been crowned but the anxious wait for the overall champions kept everyone in suspense.
It was a close contest, but West Brisbane came out on top, edging out last year's winners West Moreton, who claimed second place. In third spot, Brisbane South and Pine Rivers shared the spoils, with Gold Coast Sharks completing the top five. The final standings were as follows: 1. West Brisbane
2. West Moreton
3. Brisbane South
3. Pine Rivers
5. Gold Coast Sharks
6. Logan City
7. Gold Coast Crusaders
8. Calvary
9. North Brisbane
10. South West
11. Brisbane East
12. Brisbane Lions
13. Wide Bay Wolves
14. FNC
Australian Futsal Association would like to thank everyone who helped make the event such a positive experience for all involved. We look forward to seeing you at local centres in the coming weeks, as competition futsal restarts across the country.
